What is Global Education

Global education is a framework that we can use with existing curriculum to help our students become global citizens. Global education aims to help students discover:

  • The interconnectedness of humans, and emphasizes global interdependencies, cultures, and issues. â€‹

  • The cultural diversity of our local and global community, and helps students discover and appreciate different cultures and languages

  • How to address global issues and challenges, and creates a path for students to investigate issues, recognize perspectives, communicate ideas, and take action

Global education is not additional curriculum. It is a way to re-frame current curriculum to increase our student's global competence. While many teachers may be unaware that their existing curriculum and teaching style may already have  elements of the global education framework, it is important to remember that global education is an intentional act, and it actively works to provide students with opportunities for real-world engagement, student-driven inquiry, and a culturally response lessons.

Global Competencies are the specific skills and knowledge students gain from global education. These skills include helping students learn how to investigate both global and local issues, recognize unique perspectives, communicate ideas across cultures, and take action on both a local and global level.
